Friday, June 27, 19:00 — “Aoluguya, Aoluguya” “Yuguo and his mother” by Gu Tao
Gu Tao, born in 1970 in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, is a Chinese documentary filmmaker and cinematographer.
Beginning in 2004, Gu Tao ventured into the forests of the Greater Khingan Mountains with a DV camera and lived among the Evenki people for eight years. During this time, he completed his “Evenki Trilogy”—Aoluguya, Aoluguya, Yuguo and His Mother, and The Last Moose of Aoluguya—which documents the lives of reindeer herder Liu Xia, her brother Weijia, and her son Yuguo. The trilogy captures the quiet sorrow of a traditional hunting culture fading under the pressure of modern civilization.
“Aoluguya, Aoluguya” focuses on the Evenki reindeer herders living deep in the Greater Khingan Mountains of China. Over 300 years ago, they migrated from Siberia and have since lived by hunting and raising reindeer for generations. In 2003, an ecological relocation policy forced them to leave the forest and move into government settlements. The documentary vividly portrays their confusion and perseverance in maintaining traditional ways of life after hunting was banned: some still return to the mountains to hunt, some numb themselves with alcohol, while others express their sorrow through poetry and painting.
“Yuguo and his mother” centers on a young Evenki boy named Hugo and his mother Liu Xia. After Liu Xia lost her husband when Hugo was very young, she fell into depression and alcoholism, leading to Hugo being sent to Wuxi for free foster care. At the age of 13, Hugo returns to his hometown in the Greater Khingan Mountains to spend the winter holiday with his mother. The film unfolds slowly and poetically, revealing the emotional tension between mother and son, and Hugo’s inner struggle between life in the city and the forest.
